Essential Generator Maintenance Checklist
Generators need regular maintenance just like cars and trucks. Oil changes, spark plugs, fuel care, battery charging, and load testing keep your generator running when you need it most. This guide covers every maintenance task by frequency — 8 hours, 50 hours, 100 hours, seasonal, and yearly.
Why Generator Maintenance Matters
A generator that sits unused for 11 months and only runs during a power outage has the hardest life of any engine you own. The oil drains down, the fuel goes stale, the carburetor gums up, and the battery goes flat. When the power finally goes out at 2 AM in a winter storm, the generator that has not been touched since last year will not start. The time to discover maintenance problems is not during an emergency. A 30-minute maintenance session every spring and fall will keep your generator ready to run for years. Portable generators with regular oil changes typically last 1,000 to 2,000 hours of operation. Neglected units often fail at 200 to 500 hours due to oil sludge, stale fuel, and bad spark plugs.
Before Every Use (8-Hour Check)
- Check oil level: Most portable generators have a dipstick similar to a lawn mower engine. Check the oil when the engine is cold and resting on a level surface. Top off with the viscosity recommended in your owner's manual — typically SAE 10W-30 for most portable generators. Running a generator low on oil is the fastest way to seize the engine.
- Check fuel level and condition: If the fuel has been sitting for more than 30 days and does not smell like gasoline (it smells sour or varnish-like), drain it and refill with fresh fuel before starting.
- Inspect the air filter: A foam or paper air filter should be clean and free of debris. A clogged air filter chokes the engine, reduces power output, and wastes fuel.
- Check for loose bolts and vibration damage: Generators vibrate heavily when running. Check that the mounting bolts, muffler bolts, and frame fasteners are tight.
- Test the GFCI outlet: If your generator has GFCI-protected outlets, press the TEST button to verify it trips, then press RESET.

Every 50 Hours or Annually
- Clean or replace air filter: Foam filters can be washed in warm soapy water, dried, and re-oiled with filter oil. Paper filters must be replaced — do not attempt to clean a paper filter with compressed air as it damages the filter medium.
- Check and clean spark arrestor: If your generator is used in areas prone to wildfires, the spark arrestor screen in the muffler must be cleaned. A clogged spark arrestor reduces power output and can cause the generator to stall under load. Remove the screen and brush it clean with a wire brush.
Every 100 Hours
- Change the oil: Drain the oil while the engine is warm (run it for 5 minutes first to warm and thin the oil). Dispose of used oil at an auto parts store or recycling center. Fill with fresh oil — typically 0.6 to 1.2 quarts depending on your generator model. Record the date and hour meter reading in a log.
- Replace the spark plug: Most portable generators use a standard spark plug that costs $3 to $8. The gap should be set to 0.028 to 0.031 inches using a feeler gauge. A worn spark plug causes hard starting, misfiring under load, and reduced fuel efficiency. If the electrode is rounded or the ceramic is discolored, replace it immediately.
- Check valve clearance: Some generators require valve lash adjustment at 100-hour intervals. This is more involved work that requires removing the valve cover and using a feeler gauge between the rocker arm and valve stem. Check your owner's manual — many smaller air-cooled generators do not require this, but all liquid-cooled standby generators do.
Seasonal Maintenance — Spring Start-Up
Before storm season hits in spring or summer, perform a full service on your generator:
- Change oil and filter (if equipped)
- Replace spark plug
- Install fresh fuel with stabilizer
- Charge and test the battery (electric start models only — the battery should read at least 12.6 volts on a multimeter)
- Run the generator under load for 30 minutes to confirm it handles full rated wattage. Plug in a few space heaters or a portable AC unit to create the load. Test each outlet with a plug-in load tester.
- Check the transfer switch if one is installed — cycle it from LINE to GEN and back with the generator running to verify the mechanical linkage moves freely.
Seasonal Maintenance — Winter Storage
Storing a generator improperly over winter is the most common cause of spring start failures:
- Fuel stabilization: Add a fuel stabilizer like STA-BIL to the tank and run the generator for 10 minutes to circulate it through the carburetor. Ethanol-blended gas absorbs moisture from the air, which separates and corrodes carburetor jets. Stabilizer prevents this for 6 to 12 months.
- Alternatively, drain the carburetor: Many generators have a carburetor drain screw. Opening it while the fuel valve is off lets the bowl drain completely — the safest method for long-term storage because there is no fuel in the carburetor to gum up. Ethanol-free gas (sometimes labeled REC-90 or marine fuel) is the best choice for generator storage because it does not attract moisture and lasts up to 12 months untreated.
- Change the oil: Old oil contains acids and moisture that corrode engine bearings over months of storage. Change it before storage, not after.
- Remove the battery: For electric start generators, disconnect the battery and store it on a trickle charger. A lead-acid battery left connected to a generator during storage will self-discharge and may freeze in cold temperatures.
- Cover and store: Store the generator in a dry, clean location. Leave the generator cover on but slightly open to allow moisture to escape. Never store a generator with fuel in the tank inside a basement, living space, or attached garage — the fuel vapors are a fire hazard.
Load Bank Testing
A generator that runs only at low loads will develop wet stacking in diesel units and carbon buildup in gas units. Running a generator at less than 30 percent of its rated capacity for extended periods causes unburned fuel to deposit carbon on the spark plugs, exhaust valves, and muffler. For standby generators that rarely run under load, perform a load bank test every 12 months. This means running the generator at or near its full rated wattage for at least 1 hour to burn off carbon deposits. You can do this by plugging in high-wattage loads (space heaters, shop lights, portable AC units) or by renting a portable load bank from an equipment rental company.

Common Maintenance Mistakes
- Running the generator for 5 minutes monthly: This is not enough to warm the engine to operating temperature and burn off moisture in the oil. Moisture accumulates in the crankcase and causes sludge. Run the generator for at least 30 minutes at 50 percent load or more each month during the off-season.
- Not checking oil before each use: When a generator has been sitting for months, oil drains back into the crankcase but the level should be verified. Many engine failures happen because the owner assumed there was enough oil from last season.
- Storing fuel in the generator: Gasoline left in the carburetor bowl evaporates over weeks, leaving behind a varnish that clogs the tiny jets. Either drain the carburetor completely for storage or use ethanol-free fuel with stabilizer.
- Using automotive oil: Most portable generators require detergent oil rated for air-cooled engines. Automotive oil for water-cooled engines does not handle the higher operating temperatures of air-cooled generator engines.
- Skipping the break-in oil change: The metal particles from engine break-in circulate through the oil and cause accelerated wear if not removed after the first 5 to 10 hours.
Maintenance Log Template
Keep a simple logbook with your generator. Record the date, hour meter reading, and tasks performed.
