Fence Post Depth Guide
How deep to dig post holes, how much concrete or foam you need per post, what diameter hole to dig for chain link vs wood posts, and when frost zones matter.
The One-Third Rule
The standard rule for fence post depth is that one-third of the post's total length should be buried underground. A 6-foot fence requires a 9-foot post with 3 feet buried. A 4-foot fence uses a 6-foot post with 2 feet buried. This ratio provides enough lateral resistance to keep the fence upright under wind load without requiring excessive digging.
Frost Depth by Climate Zone
Frost depth is the most important factor in determining post hole depth in cold climates. When water in the soil freezes, it expands and pushes upward — this is called frost heave and it will lift fence posts out of the ground over a single winter if they are not set deep enough.
Frost depth varies by geographic zone based on climate data collected over decades. The International Residential Code (IRC) provides frost depth maps used by building departments for permit approvals:
- Zone 1 (Southern US, coastal): Frost depth 0-6 inches. Posts can be set at minimum depth with minimal heave risk.
- Zone 2 (Mid-South, transition climates): Frost depth 6-18 inches. Standard 24-inch holes are usually sufficient.
- Zone 3 (Central US, Midwest): Frost depth 18-36 inches. Post holes should be at least 30-36 inches deep.
- Zone 4 (Northern US, mountain regions): Frost depth 36-48 inches. Posts should be set 36-48 inches deep.
- Zone 5 (Far North, Canada border): Frost depth 48-60 inches. Posts require at least 48 inches below grade.
To find your local frost depth, check your county building department or use the National Weather Service frost depth map. If you are unsure, deeper is always safer — adding an extra 6 inches to each hole costs a few dollars in concrete but prevents years of post repairs.
Post Hole Diameter
The hole should be three times the diameter of the post. This provides enough room for concrete or foam to surround the post and anchor it against lateral wind loads.
Wood Privacy Fence Posts
- 4x4 post (actual 3.5x3.5): 10-12 inch diameter hole
- 6x6 post (actual 5.5x5.5): 14-16 inch diameter hole
Chain Link Fence Posts
Chain link posts are smaller in diameter than wood posts, and the hole sizing is different because the posts are set in concrete below grade even though the visible portion is thin tubing.
- Line posts (1-5/8 inch diameter): Dig a 6-inch diameter hole. Set the post so that one-third of its length is below grade. For a 6-foot fence with 7-foot line posts, that means approximately 28 inches buried.
- Terminal posts (2-3/8 inch diameter — corner, end, and gate posts): Dig an 8 to 10-inch diameter hole. Terminal posts carry the tension of the chain link fabric and gate weight, so they need a larger concrete collar for stability.
Always set chain link posts in concrete. Unlike wood fences where the post carries the load through the embedment depth, chain link posts rely on the concrete collar to resist the tension from the stretched fabric. A dry-set or gravel-only fill for chain link will loosen within the first season and the fence will sag.
Gravel Base for Drainage
Before pouring concrete or foam, add 2 to 4 inches of gravel to the bottom of each hole. This creates a drainage layer that prevents water from pooling at the bottom of the post where concrete or foam would trap it against the wood.
For wood posts, standing water at the bottom of the hole causes rot at the base of the post — the most common failure point. The gravel lifts the post base above the water table and provides a path for moisture to drain into the surrounding soil.
For chain link posts, concrete surrounds the entire below-grade section, so the gravel base prevents the concrete plug from sitting in standing water during the pour. The concrete bonds better to dry soil than to saturated mud.
Concrete Fill: How Much Per Post
For a standard 4x4 wood post in a 10-inch hole 30 inches deep, the concrete volume is roughly 1.15 cubic feet — about 3 bags of 60lb mix or 2 bags of 80lb per post. For a 14-post fence, that is 42 bags of 60lb concrete, roughly 2,500 pounds of material to transport and mix.
For chain link line posts in a 6-inch hole 24 inches deep, you need roughly 0.5 cubic feet per post — about 1 bag of 80lb concrete per post. For terminal posts in a 10-inch hole 30 inches deep, same as a 4x4 wood post: 2 bags of 80lb each.
